Hey! Thanks for checking out my website and listening to some of my songs! I figured I should probably tell you about myself here...other than what you gain from the stories I write. I'm from a big family (6 kids) in a small town (Pittston, PA - to be exact).
I was incredibly shy as a child and didn't talk much, if at all, until about the age 7 when I walked up in front of the congregation at my church and started singing. (I vaguely remember this but am always reminded when I see people who knew me then). Of course, everyone was a little shocked since most of them had never even heard me speak. I haven't shut up since. :)
I was very particular and overly organized with my barbie dream house, a behavior which has continued with my apartment today...I'm certain this annoys my sister. When I was younger I would put on fashion shows for my family and design the clothes. I couldn't get my older siblings to model but I always made my younger brother and sister do it! (I'm certain my brother is still annoyed by having to do that). My father traveled a lot for work and with six kids, my mother was just happy if we didn't kill each other or drive her nuts. I was always having slumber parties where we would spend all night making movies and music videos. I still have those videos...they are soooo bad! Ha!
I spent all of junior high and high school involved with chorus, track, basketball, cheerleading (for 1 day - I hated it), and our High school drama club. I started writing all the time, just melodies and poems. I would record hooks to songs I'd written on a tape player. My parents enrolled me at a studio in town where I studied vocals and then modeling for my cousin's company. Yeah, I sang Whitney Houston songs at every mall and festival in Northeastern PA, made some really awful commercials, and completely blanked out on stage at a Miss Teen pageant. I don't think I'm cut out for all of that. Also, I was built like a 10 year old boy until I turned 20 or so...Did you know there are all sorts of rules for padding your dress or sewing boobs in for pageants???
After High school I studied vocal performance at a University near my home town. However, I was less than thrilled with the program. I left after one semester. I didn't want to teach music or sing Opera. I always wanted to move to New York City. I wanted to be surrounded with that energy...with what I saw on TV and on Broadway. Figuring I would take some time to make this happen, I enrolled at a community college. However, on the day of orientation, they had messed up my transcripts and had me placed with Broadcast Communications. I thought it sounded like fun so I just stayed with it. Little curves in the road! I LOVED learning about TV and radio and had my first shot at being a DJ on our school station...My show - "Friday Rewind". I basically played "Come on Eileen" about 100 times - I just loved the song...BUT my favorite part was having friends in to interview and trying out different skits on air. That was a blast! By the second semester I was offered a part time producer position at 98.5 WKRZ FM, a local radio station in my town. It was a huge station though, and the afternoon show had been #1 forever! I worked with that show for years. I have a lot of great stories from my radio days...perhaps another time.
On New Years Day, I drove out out to NYC with my sister and best friend. We stood in Times Square and I remember looking around at the remains of what I'd seen the night before on TV with Dick Clark. Even with the City looking a mess, it was awesome. That October I gave away all of my stuff, took what I needed, and headed out of town. My sister would join me later that month. We spent a year or so sleeping on the floor of a one bedroom box in Jersey City Heights. I worked outdoors at a Christmas Tree stand in Soho for a month straight and it was CRAZY COLD! I cried a lot! It was the hardest year to date...Still, I knew what I'd wanted and the experience was amazing. Things are much better these days! Thank God!
I remember walking around in awe for the first...well, I still do sometimes. I quickly jumped on the open mic scene and was playing 3 or 4 times a night in NYC and meeting amazing people and musicians. I signed on with a producer, worked a million hours a week, and recorded my debut album "In the Margins". The album made the Grammy Ballot in 8 categories! As both a performer and a writer, I was over the moon!!!! Not only had I watched the Grammy Awards pretty much since I was born, but I would record them and watch it all year. I'm currently in the studio working on my second album and I'm REALLY excited!
I am so grateful for every person, process, and experience that has helped shape me today. I look forward to creating and giving more of myself through my music and who knows, maybe more....I have become pretty crafty in the kitchen and I still have my headphones from my radio days!
In short:
I love to cook, but only do so in large quantities...so I usually end up feeding all of my friends.
My favorite website is www.sockdreams.com
I love anything from Tiffany's
I'm afraid of the dark
I can't whistle or wink
I do a leg lock when I rollerskate, which I do regularly in my apartment
I will watch the proposal episode of Friends anytime, and do often
I think the name Walter is funny
Philadelphia is my second favorite city
Nashville is my third
I am slowly studying French, but please don't try to talk to me in french, yet.
I could listen to the Rat Pack for days on end
I always sleep on the right side of the bed, I think that is supposed to mean something??
My apartment is always filled with flowers and smells like nag champa.
I think I can dance. others do not
I hate surprises, but also love them.
Thank you for all of your support and LOVE.
Kelly xoxo
